The Story of our 2005 American Indian Beauties Calendar Shoot

By Mary DeHaas - Producer

We had such a terrific time on the photo shoot. Here's the scoop on our exciting week of fun and fashion at Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin.

Friday, July 30 - Keith and Mary (producers) arrive at the Lake of the Torches Casino Resort. We will be location scouting with production assistant extraordinaire Kris Sprinkmann. Kris has done some scouting before hand, and Mary did some online scouting of the area, so between them, they have a lot to look at.

Saturday, July 31 - Keith, Mary and Kris hit the lakes with Joe Cobb location scouting. We also spent the day driving all over the reservation and surrounding areas getting a feel for what shots were going to happen where on what days. Some of the girls are starting to arrive. They are met at the airport and taken by limousine to the resort to meet each other, relax and get ready for their busy week.

Sunday, August 1 - The rest of the models and crew arrive and are picked up by the limo. Today is the wardrobe fitting with Mary and hair and make-up consultations with Crystal Williams. Luli Fama, Cover Style, Moonsplash, Pan Dulce and Ritchie Swimwear have provided each of the girls with some sexy fabulous suits! They are going to be looking good! 7PM everyone dresses up in their finest for the big Welcome Dinner. Head of marketing Randy Soulier personally welcomes us all and treats us to a fantastic private welcome dinner. (Low calorie, please, we need to fit into those suits in the morning.)

Monday, August 2 - Today's shoot is with Kimberly Hunt, Tanya Kleis, Gya Watson and Christy Duthu. 6 AM make-up call comes early! We start the day with Kimberly over in the boxing ring. Lac du Flambeau has a terrific boxing program. Thanks go out to Jerome La Barge for helping us to get the equipment and the facility for this shoot. Kim studied stage combat at the British American Dramatic Academy in London, but this was a new style of fighting for her. We got some sexy boxing shots in. Time to meet Tanya, Gya and Christy and head out on the pontoon boat for some island shots. Wouldn't you know, it started to rain! Not only that, but our pontoon boat decided it wanted to die at one of the islands as well. We got some cute shots of Gya, Tanya and Christy before it started to pour. We got a pontoon rescue boat (thank God for cell phones), and headed back for shelter and lunch. The sun came up in the afternoon, and we headed for the Lake of the Falls for the afternoon shots. Those turned out just gorgeous! So many little waterfalls and rocks to shoot on...we also got some killer sunset shots. Then back to the resort for dinner at the Eagle's Nest Restaurant. What a great day! The girls who weren't photographing today went out on the lakes boating in the afternoon and catching some sun. Fun with Joe!

Tuesday, August 3 - Today's shoot will feature Elly Mossett, Sarah Sawyer, Ashley Harris and Lynsay Tomow. We started the day at an air strip at Lakeland Aviation. Kris has arranged for Stephan Kunz to provide our model Lynsay with the coolest of cool WWII era airplanes. Lynsay will be joining the US Air Force this fall, so I wanted an old fashioned pin up girl look for her month's main photo. Cover Style swimwear gave us a military green suit with patches just for the shot. She did a fantastic job, those shots are going to look killer! Then it was off to the ranch of Jay and Deanne Kidd. We tried some horse pictures with Sarah, but I don't know if any of those are going to work out. You can't always count on animals to cooperate. We also shot Elly in a field of rye this morning. If those shots turn out anything like they looked in person, Elly is going to have one fantastic set of pics!!! We have a specific location to shoot Ashley along with a 1970's M-35-A2 army truck. Thank you to Bob Wegmann for loaning us the truck. Nice dog tags, Ashley! Now its is off to Lake of the Falls for lunch and afternoon pictures. The Lake of the Falls has so many places to shoot, I know we got Ashley's main shot there and some cool pics of Elly with the Native Naturals products. Then we set off for the pow-wow grounds and caught some cool shots at the entrance. Sarah's main picture is taken there. All greens and little yellow flowers. (But what is that smell?????) The models who didn't shoot today went to the George W. Brown Cultural Center Museum and to the pow-wow. Dinner at the Eagle's Nest Restaurant. Great day ladies!

Wednesday, August 4 - 6 AM make-up call for Amanda Robison, Sweetie Wiggins, Dorian Vandergriff and Autumn Day. We started the day on the grounds of the Lake of the Torches Resort with Amanda posing on a 1967 red Ford Mustang. Thanks to Willie Seeliger and Chris Seeliger for letting us use your award winning Mustang for this shoot. Since Amanda's month is going to February, we wanted a red car to go along with her heart bikini. It worked. She looked so cute! Then we took Sweetie over to the pow-wow grounds where we photographed her in a sexy "motorcyle bikini" on Lucus Bongo's red "crotch rocket." Those are some fine shots, Sweetie! Let's hit the lake girls! We went to several islands that we didn't get to yet, starting with Dorian. Her first island, well, we dubbed it "spider island" ooouuuuuhhhhhhhh. Don't ask!!!!!!! (But just look at the awesome cover photo we got on that little island!) Autumn was next with her beaded bikini, then Sweetie posed on the next island. The girls who weren't shooting today will be going to Waswagoning - a recreated traditional Ojibwe village featuring traditional lodges, birch bark canoes, baskets, traps etc... very cool. Then shopping with the limo in town. Everyone in town seems to know the girls are here, and they are quite the local celebrities!!! It was actually a little too sunny today. We kept getting sun glare messing up all of my terrific planned places, but despite that and the leaches, we got some really great shots. You girls made it easy this year. Not a diva in the bunch!! Back to the resort for dinner.

Thursday, August 5 - Group shots in the morning and media day. It's a wrap! Half of the girls flew out today - the other half - had a wrap party. Keith and the girls treated Mary to some birthday fun to celebrate her 40th birthday.

Friday, August 6 - Back to reality. Thanks go out to the Lake of the Torches  for being such super hosts for the shoot!!!! And thank you to a fantastic group of American Indian Beauties. You were grace, fun, style, just a wonderful group of ladies who conducted yourselves with poise and professionalism. You're the best!!!!!! Now to get back home and get the layout done. But first....a little R & R...... Keith treated Mary to a spa massage today. Well deserved, I can assure you! You girls wore me out!!!
