In July of 2003 we completed the photo shoot for the 2004 calendar. Boy, did these girls do a terrific job!!! Here are some highlights from our week at Grand Lake, Colorado (Colorado's largest natural lake) at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park: Sat. July 19: The models and crew start arriving in Denver. Dinner is hosted by Ron & Alison Bjornseth. When in Denver, the Girls of Rez Dog stay at the Holiday Inn - Denver Central. Sun. July 20: Morning - we picked up the rest of the models and crew at the airport and then it was off to Grand County, Colorado and Silver Creek on some pretty twisting and turning mountain roads. It poured down rain on our drive - first rain in the area in 3 weeks. Hope our shoot doesn't get rained out! 3:00 PM Location scouting – Keith & Mary DeHaas & photographer Leslie Timmerman are dropped off at Devil’s Thumb Ranch to meet with Dale Lind of Devil's Thumb Outfitters. We saddle up the horses, and for the next 3 hours, we scout locations on horseback. We found some beautiful creeks, waterfalls, fields of wildflowers and rocks to shoot the girls. Oooohhhh, saddle sore already, and the shoot hasn't even begun! 3:30 PM The girls check into the beautiful mountain resort The Inn at SilverCreek. They are one of our sponsors, and we are so pleased to be working with them. Mike Claney and Kristin Schuring have been so helpful in getting everything set up for us. 4:00 PM Model consultations with our hair and make-up artist Crystal Williams (Coushatta) and wardrobe/production assistant Toni Lee Tsatoke (Kiowa). Swimwear this year is being provided by Leatherbikini.com and Moonsplash/Cover Style Swimwear. Moonsplash/CoverStyle provides some of the suits for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, so we are thrilled to have them providing our gorgeous Indian models with the coolest of cool suits. And the sexy leather bikinis we have this year from Leatherbikini.com are even washable! Be sure to check both of these companies out, they are SWEET! 8:00 PM Welcome dinner and meeting with all models and staff . Time for a quick sauna before bed. Mon. July 21: 6:00 AM Make-up. We started the shoot with some sexy motorcycle shots of Tvhokne Harjo at the resort at 7:30 AM. Her dad, Mody Harjo, brought down his award winning 1998 Harley Davidson custom lowrider motorcycle from Denver. It is awesome!!!! It is painted with Seminole Chief Osceola. Tvohoke looked hot draped across it. Thanks Dad!!! 8:30 AM Off to the 4,000 acre Devil’s Thumb Ranch on the Continental Divide with the first 4 of our models. Dale gets us all saddled up and we take to the mountains. There are 11 of us on this day's trip. Jinna Cota, one of our sponsors from Dreamcatcher Designs in Oklahoma City has joined us for today's shoot. (I wonder if she knows what she is getting herself into?) We climbed up and down mountains on horseback, shooting the girls on horseback, in waterfalls, at the creeks, on the rocks, in a field of daisies..... we had a very full day. The remaining 8 models get to sleep in and relax at the resort. "Where's the Starbucks?" At 5:30 PM the remaining 8 models saddled up for a short trail ride and then they met us at a camp area where we had a cook out on the open range. After dinner we took some group shots, then it was back on the horses to the corral. Tues. July 22: 6:00 AM Make-up with our next 4 models. 9:00 AM We meet Jane Kemp at Sol Vista Marina for shots on Grand Lake. Jane has a beautiful stone house on Grand Lake with her own private beach. She was so kind to open her home and heart to us, and let us shoot there. She had all sorts of props - a cool boat house, boats, canoes, kayak, hammock, sail board....We also got some very cool shots on her antique mahogany runabout. Beautiful day on the lake!! Then it was off to The Rapids Lodge and Restaurant for waterfall shots. Thanks to Amy at the Rapids for all of your terrific help. Boy, were our girls troupers!!! That waterfall water was COOOOOLLLLLLDDDDD!!!!!! By now the entire town knows we are here, and everyone is a buzz. People are stopping our girls on the street to ask if they can take pictures with them. Super models in the making!!! 8:00 PM Dinner at the Rapids Restaurant in Grand Lake. We highly recommend them. All heads turned when our 12 beautiful models walked in. I overheard one guy at a table say "that was the best part of my week." Wed. July 23: 6:00 AM Make-up 8:30 AM We took the remaining 4 models to Arapaho Bay to start off the day. We had a rude awakening when we found out the water table was much lower this year. We got in a few shots, but then it started to rain. Lunch break. Back to the Inn to pick up Mary. She sat out the morning - sick - too much altitude, sun, horses, not enough water, sleep deprivation etc...it all caught up with her. We went back to Jane Kemp's place for the afternoon and got some more terrific shots, including some sexy sister shots of Keli and Erika. (Isn't that every guy's fantasy? I don't know, they may be TOO MUCH for this calendar. We'll see if they pass the "Mom" test first.) Rain forced us into a gazebo, where we actually got some really interesting shots in. The rain let up, so Jane took us out to her ranch and we photographed the girls in leather bikinis in the picturesque creek that ran through it. It's a wrap!!! 8:30 Wrap dinner party at Hernando's Pizza and Pasta Pub in Winter Park, CO!!! Again, all heads turned when our beautiful girls all walked in. People were coming up to our tables and asking for pictures. Thanks to Kimber and Jeff Davidson for the terrific gourmet pizza and pasta. Be sure to try them out next time you are in the area. The girls said it was the best pizza they had ever had. (Of course, for some of them, they had been dieting pretty hard to get ready for the shoot, so they were ready to finally get to "pig out" on some pizza!) Some of our girls took off tonight back to Denver so they wouldn't miss their early morning flights. Thanks to Ron & Alison Bjornseth for hosting our girls once again and making sure they got to the airport in time. Thurs. July 24: 7:00AM We depart the resort for the airport in Denver. We made it just in time! Looking back on the week, it was a fantastic experience and one we will never forget!!!!! We appreciated the girls who showed up with great attitudes, being professional and gracious. (How many of us wouldn't enjoy being flown into a deluxe resort, being fed in 4 star restaurants, getting free swimwear and Rez Dog tees, getting to ride horseback in the clean mountain air, being photographed in the mountains lakes and waterfalls by a top photographer and being featured in Indian Country's favorite calendar!!!!!) Thank you so much to our models, photographer and staff for making this a week to remember. You girls are beauty and grace and we look forward to showing you off!! Our Indian women are the most beautiful women in the world and we will always carry a special place in our heart for The Girls of Rez Dog Clothing Company 2004 - American Indian Beauties!! Sat. Sept. 6: The fun continues. Unfortunately, Rez Dog Clothing Company had to disqualify one of the original 12 models that went on our Colorado photo shoot (professional and gracious behavior is must for the girls who will be our ambassadors for the year). So we had the wonderful opportunity to give our alternate model a call, and give her the unexpected exciting news, "Charleta Richey, you have been chosen to be in our American Indian Beauties calendar for 2004!!!" Charleta lives in Oklahoma, and so we flew in our photographer Leslie Timmerman, and off we went, not to Grand Lake, Colorado, but this time to Grand Lake, Oklahoma. We had a beautiful weekend. It was Leslie Timmerman, Mary DeHaas, Charleta Richey and Erika and Keli Focht. They also went on the shoot to pick up some more pics and to give Charleta some good moral support. The next couple of nights were spent at the beautiful Shangri-La Resort on Grand Lake in the Northeastern part of Oklahoma. This place is a golfer's paradise. Be sure to dine at "The Waters" restaurant at the resort. We were treated like queens! Sun. Sept. 7: Nancy Johnson met us this morning at the Shangri-La marina with her speed boat, and off we went to our various locations. We started the morning at the home of Chris Sottong, who had waterfalls and even a panther cage on his property. The rest of the day was spent on the water and on various islands photographing our lovely girls in the glorious Oklahoma sun. Charleta made a great "Sexy Santa's Helper!" We spent part of the afternoon at Stony Point at Nancy's lake home photographing around the inlet. We even got a couple of "sexy sister" shots of Erika and Keli in the hot tub. OH YEAH! Our three models did a beautiful job and we had quite the fun time. This one was strictly a girls weekend - Rez Dog was up in North Dakota at United Tribes Pow-wow the entire time. Too bad, he was really wishing he could have been there! Thanks Charleta for rounding out our 12 American Indian Beauties. Now for Mary to burn the midnight oil getting the details together, and Gail Lee of Okla Design Solutions to work her magic in order to put it all together and get the finishing touches on the calendar and get it to the printer. Our 2004 Sponsors: We thank you with all of our hearts. This shoot would not have been possible without your kind generosity:
